OKM Sacramento Beginnings
In early 1942 the Ong Ko Met Association in Sacramento was formed by Jack Tang, Stanley Dong, Chong Ong, Don Haw, Wing Tow Ong, Ong Si Jum, and Kung Ong among many others.
It began in a rented 2nd floor at at 973-3rd Street but Dong Haw suggested that the membership buy and construct a new association building. While many donated to the building fund drive, it was Dong Haw who was credited with its success by acquiring generous donations from many Ong family members in San Francisco, Albuquerque, and Phoenix. As a result, in 1952 a brand new two-story building was completed at 318 I Street.
In 1960 the Sacramento Redevelopment Agency presented a proposal to establish a Chinatown Mall in the area where the Confucius Temple had just been built. The proposal was conditioned on the ability of Sacramento Chinese leaders such as restauranteur Frank Fat, Dr. Herbert Yee, Joe and Jack Tang, Paul Dong, Sam N. Ong, James Ong, and Lincoln Ong to raise $2.1 million within 6 months. To the amazement of all, the requisite funds were raised in less than 3 months.
In July of 1971 the current home of Ong Ko Met Benevolent Association of Sacramento at 427 Chinatown Mall was completed. A spectacular grand opening attended by thousands was held on Thursday, August 26th.

Study Study Study . . . Work Work Work
That’s what’s expected of most Chinese kids.
For many it was easy to comply with our parents wishes. . Just doing what we were supposed to do didn’t bother us too much. We knew our parents just wanted us to have a much better and easier life than they had.
That meant that even if they could not really afford to send us to college or grad school, they would somehow find a way to do it.
It wasn’t easy. They sacrificed so so much. Looking back, school is easy. Work is hard.
We made and make the same sacrifices they did because they taugh us what’s important.
